We have made it to the round of 16 and now every game matters. One side of the bracket is considerably better than the other. The round of 16 starts on the hard side of the bracket. Let’s not waste time and let’s get right into how things may play out in this game.
Both Portugal and Uruguay have looked good in this tournament so far. Ronaldo looks like Ronaldo and Uruguay did what they were supposed to do in their lackluster group. Now, these two teams face off. Overall, I think Uruguay has the better team and if the brackets turned out differently, I would not have been surprised if they made a deep run. Their team is very good. Their two center backs, Gimenez and Godin are one of the most formidable pairing left in the tournament. Godin, the Atletico Madrid center back, has been a top 5 defender for the past three or four years. Gimenez, also of Atletico Madrid, is young and is showing how could he could be. Then, you move to the frontline and the Uruguayans have the best striker partnership in the tournament in Cavani and Suarez. Now, you may ask “if they are the better team shouldn’t they win? Why is this even being debated?” Well, the other team has Ronaldo and he is pretty good at football. The man can singlehandedly win you a game and he might just do that against Uruguay
However, I do not think that will be the case tomorrow. I think Ronaldo’s World Cup dreams end around 4 o’clock eastern time tomorrow. The reason? The team around him is just not good enough. Ronaldo had his best chance of winning the World Cup when he was young and still on the rise when he was with Manchester United. Now, the Portugal team is old and truly not good enough to win this tournament or this game.
