The World Cup in Russia is right around the corner and one nation that I cannot make my mind up on is England. I keep asking myself if this is finally the tournament that they make a run and show that they are a formidable team. If you did not know, in the Euros in 2016 England got knocked out in the round of 16 by Iceland, which was considered one of the biggest upsets in that tournament. The last World Cup in 2014, England did not win a game in Brazil and were eliminated in group play. For the team they have, those were two extremely disappointing tournaments.
This brings me to whether or not the world will see the same England or a side that actually looks like it can compete when the stakes are the highest. For me, I think they are in an even worse place then they were before, and it is not because they have gotten worse, but because other nations have gotten better. I ask myself: How many teams do I name off before I say England and there is quite a few. Just to name some, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Brazil and Argentina. I really cannot make a case that England can beat any of these teams with the way they have played at the previous two tournaments. Not to mention, England has not won a World Cup since the country won its first one in 1966.
I understand that England has tons of star power with players like Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli. However, that is really it. I do not know if I am confident in any of the goalies they brought to this tournament because none of them have proven themselves on the biggest stage. I am not completely sold on the center of the field for them either. Whether it is their center backs or their center midfielders, I do not see players that can match up with some of the countries in this tournament.
With all this being said, I think England fans, as well as the team, will come back very disappointed by the performance this team will put in at the this summer’s World Cup.
