After PSG’s heartbreaking loss against Liverpool in the Champions League, Edison Cavani has been in the news. He has said that people underestimate the talent and competition in the French League. He even went out on a limb and said that a top Premier League team would have a tough time competing in the French League. To that remark, I say, definitely not, Edison.
It is quite simple to see why I say this. The French League has maybe two world-class teams: PSG and Monaco (calling Monaco a world-class team is a stretch since they sold most of their good players). After those two teams, there is not many teams that scare you if you are a big team. This shows because PSG is a top five team consistently talent-wise. However, they never really come close to winning the Champions League. The reason is exactly what I was just talking about: there is not competition in the French League for PSG. They can stroll into every weekend and half-ass it and win by two goals. Playing those games every week does not prepare you to play Liverpool on their home field. Liverpool almost every week has to play their best team because if they slip up against a lesser opponent, four other top teams probably did not. Cavani, in my opinion, is wrong. Every year PSG wins the French League by a large margin. The reason is the lack of competition. I think they will continue the struggle to win the Champions League because of this fact.
