Not to jump to conclusions, but the Lakers may have just won next year’s NBA Finals. With the news coming out today that Kawhi wants a trade from San Antonio, the Lakers odds just jumped to 6/1 to win the 2019 Finals. That puts them at the same odds as the Celtics and better odds than the Spurs, Cavs and Raptors. The Lakers are all of a sudden favorites to land Lebron and Kawhi, as well as Paul George. If they somehow manage to acquire all 3 players, I think they may just be unbeatable.
It would likely take some moving of young pieces to land Leonard, maybe a package of Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Luol Deng and a pick or two. Deng is due about $37 million over the next 2 seasons so his contract will clear up almost all the necessary space for LA to take on Kawhi’s $20 million he’s owed next year. Then they can afford to sign Lebron and George to max deals, leaving the rest of the roster to be filled by draft picks and low level free agents. It’s a longshot, but it’s very possible, and some might say its even probable that we see this happen.
A starting 5 of Lonzo Ball, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Lebron James, and any other NBA player is probably the favorites to win it all next year. The matchup problems caused by facing 3 all NBA caliber wings would be mind-boggling and I’m not sure even the Warriors could stop them.
This is why the NBA offseason might be more entertaining than the regular season, it just doesn’t disappoint!
