One dream many Knicks fans hoped for last summer was a Kyrie Irving to New York trade, but now with the recent news that Irving will not be sign an extension that dream may become a reality. Irving, who is coming off a season ending knee surgery, has a player option for the 2019-2020 season that he will likely decline to test the free agent market. This news is great news for Knicks fans because this move all said and done, makes so much sense.
Irving, a New Jersey native, who grew up in Elizabeth, would in a sense be coming back home to play in front of a crowd who would take Kyrie in with open arms. I know for one thing, this addition of Irving would bring a ton of energy to a team and eager fan base that has yet to make the Eastern Conference Finals since 2000. The Knicks are one of four teams that were atop the organizations that Irving would like to have been traded to last summer.
Both Kristaps Porzingis and Kyrie Irving this past season have expressed playing with one another and appreciate how they play the game. This combination, I believe can be atop the leagues best, as the Knicks would have two of some the NBA’s best young talent on the court. I can see it now, with Kyrie dishing out some nasty passes over to KP for a beautiful two hand slam. This addition, I believe may also be very beneficial for KP and possibly Enes Kanter because new head coach Dave Fizdale likes to have his big men shoot from downtown to expand the floor. I also believe that Frank Ntilikina may also been benefit largely from this acquisition as he could learn a lot from Irving, as he is a top 3-point guard in the league.
As the draft approaches, I believe this could be another important component in building a solid Knicks dynasty. If the Knicks are very serious in signing Irving, I think Mikal Bridges maybe the answer in the draft if he still available as he has expressed interest in playing for the organization and the team is in need for a small forward. Overall, this is all a dream scenario for the Knicks, but I truly believe it could happen and with the addition of a superstar like Kyrie the Knicks could easily become a top title contender in the East, especially if LeBron ends up in the west. Hey Knick fans, it is always fun to dream, but let’s hope this one becomes a reality.
