My pick to win the Stanley Cup Finals is the Vegas Golden Knights over the Washington Capitals in six games. I have doubted the Knights since the team was drafted in June last year, I guessed they were going to finished bottom five in the league...I was wrong. I also said they were not going to keep up their stellar play the entire season and would fall off...I was wrong. Lastly, I said that Vegas would not win a playoff series...I was very wrong. So now I’m flipping the switch and saying Vegas will win the cup. (I can’t believe I’m saying this).
Rest: The Vegas Golden Knights have played 15 games so far these playoffs compared to 19 games for the Washington Capitals. After last series for the Knights, players said that they did not catch the Jets at their best because they just came off a 7-game series against the Nashville Predators. Vegas is coming off a five-game series against the Jets and the Caps are coming off a 7-game series against the Lightning. This time of year, a team being more rested than the other can make the difference in the end.
Goaltending: While both Marc-Andre Fleury and Braden Holtby have been excellent for their clubs so far these playoffs, Fleury has been lights out. He is 12-3 and has a 1.68 Goals Against Average and a .947 Save Percentage. “Flower” is easily playing the best hockey of his career and has to be the backbone for the Knights this series.
The Story: The Knights are just four wins away from a miracle, winning the Stanley Cup. They have so much momentum and support behind them whether it is the residents of Las Vegas or hockey fans all around the world.
My pick to win the Stanley Cup will be the Washington Capitals over the Vegas Golden Knights in 7 games. Out of all the Capitals teams, who would have ever thought that this one would go to the Stanley Cup Final. Some may say they were not as deep this season as opposed to the last couple of years. Coming into the season, certain experts even had the Capitals missing the playoffs. The Caps flew under the radar most of the season and still won the Metropolitan Division despite having less depth than previous years. There was something different about this Capitals team this year and they have surprised everyone. They seem to finally be over the hump and now that they are I expect them to finish the job and win the Stanley Cup.
Alex Ovechkin: The Great 8 is a man on a mission. He is playing the most dominant brand of hockey in his career right now and numbers support this. Ovechkin has 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 19 games this postseason and has been the best player on the ice almost every single night. He’s engaged physically and he’s out there buzzing the entire time he’s on the ice. He wants this Stanley Cup so bad and deserves one.
Road Warriors: To win the Stanley Cup you need to win games on the road and the Washington Capitals have perfected that these playoffs. The Caps are 8-2 this postseason on the road and will not back down in a very tough Vegas environment. They’ve played smart road games all playoffs long and I expect that to be no different in Vegas.
Physical play: The Washington Capitals are a heavy hockey team. They almost have a Western Conference type of style as they aren’t afraid to throw their bodies around and cycle below the dots and play along the boards. Vegas could struggle if they get into a physical matchup with Washington as they are a big heavy team.
So, Jack has Vegas in 6 and Chris has Washington is 7. Who do you have? Tweet us at @NhlNosebleed with your pick!
