It was supposed to be a day of celebration for the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Washington Capitals. But that party has been somewhat soiled with the massive news that was just announced by NHL Player Safety, Tom Wilson will be suspended the first 20 games of the regular season.
This is not just some goon getting suspended this is Tom Wilson, Alex Ovechkin’s line mate and a Stanley Cup champion. Wilson is a huge part of this Capitals team and losing for him for 20 games will have an immense impact on this club.
Player Safety explained the reasoning for the suspension…In their reasoning they said that Wilson picked up speed when he saw Oskar Sundqvist and Wilson’s main point of contact was Sundqvist’s head. Also, worth noting player safety explained that hitting someone going across the middle of the ice is allowed.
In conclusion, I think the NHL Player Safety department is setting a precedent for the season to come. The NHL is a different league and fans need to realize that any sort of hit to the head will lead to a lengthy suspension. This is a huge loss to the Caps plain and simple.
