After day two of opening week of the 2018/2019 NHL season, we have seen many signs that point towards a fun and interesting season ahead.
First game? No Problem
The newest members of the NHL made an immediate impact for their clubs on the opening night of the season. Vancouver Canucks rookie and future superstar Elias Petersson scored in his first ever NHL game, Max Comtois of the Anaheim Ducks scored his first NHL goal in the first minute of his very first NHL game; Max Lajoie the rookie defenseman got a goal and a helper in the first period of his first NHL game. So far, it has been quite the first couple of nights for rookies and I personally am beyond excited to watch this season.
The “Big bad Bruins”...
The only thing remotely close to big and bad on the Bruins opening night was the attack on Lars Eller at the hands of you guessed it, Brad Marchand. After debate over how Eller celebrated a goal, Marchand did not take to kindly and essentially attacked Eller and give him a pretty good bruising. Besides that, it was a great night for hockey if you were the Washington Capitals and their fanbase. The Caps got to see their Stanley cup banner being raised to the rafters, Kuznetsov had himself a 2-goal night, Backstrom had himself a 3-point night and the Bruins…well no one showed up. Game 2 of the season was against the Buffalo Sabres, the Bruins managed to tally up 4 goals against a Buffalo Sabres team who’s struggles continue from last season.
Don’t plan the parade just yet
We see it year after year, the Leafs look good to start, Toronto media outlets and fans start to plan their Stanley cup parade and everyone in Toronto gets their hearts broken when the cup doesn’t come home come June time. With that said, this is the best team the Toronto Maple Leafs have had on the ice in many, many years. It is hard not to get excited when watching this team play. We got to see Tavares scoring in his first game with a Leafs jersey on, Matthews scoring two goals, and Andersen making 29 saves in what was overall a really good game between the Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs. As previously mentioned, it is still early though; don’t plan the parade just yet. We still witnessed some horrific breakdowns by their defensemen in their own zone, which gives us more questions and concerns then answers and confidence.
Goals goals goals!!
Watching the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins faceoff is always entertaining. When you were there to watch the Crosby vs Ovechkin from the very beginning, you understand why these teams have no love for each other. The game ended 7-6 for the Pens making it one of the highest NHL season openers in modern history. The Pens had 7 players with 2 points or more and the Caps had T.J Oshie with a 3-point game and Carlson with a 2 point game. This was not the best game of the night, but the most entertaining game of the night for sure.
