The dominance of the Vegas Golden Knights is the top storyline of the 2017-2018 NHL season so far. After beating the Hurricanes Saturday 5-1 on the road the Knights are officially 1st in the entire National Hockey League. 1st place; a year after forming a whole new roster from scratch! Just unbelievable. The Knights hold an impressive record of 31-11-4 in 46 games in their first year of existence. They also have a +34 goal differential. Oh, and I forgot to mention this team has played FIVE different goalies after starting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury went down with an injury earlier in the season. How the team kept winning is crazy and is hard to answer.
The best way to describe the players on this team is as “misfit toys”. Why so? The players past respective teams let Vegas take these players for virtually nothing in the expansion draft last year. Also, Gerard Gallant a coach who was just fired by the Florida Panthers is on his way to winning the Jack Adams Award, also known as coach of the year in the NHL. I could only imagine what goes through the players and Gallant’s minds when they touch that ice for the Knights, but I think I have somewhat of an idea, “Prove them wrong”. Who’s them? The teams that gave up on that players the previous year.
We are half way through the regular season and its looking like the Vegas Golden Knights will be making the playoffs for the first time in their existence…One season to be exact. Wouldn’t it be something if they won the cup, Leicester City worthy, not quite, but a miracle, yes.
