Exactly two weeks ago, Barry Trotz coached the Washington Capitals to a championship. The unthinkable was done, Trotz was the coach who finally got Ovechkin over the hump to win the Stanley Cup. One week after winning that cup, Barry Trotz resigned as head coach of the Capitals after rumors throughout the season swirled that this would be his last season behind the Caps bench no matter what. Now, on June 21st the New York Islanders announced that they have hired the 55-year-old Stanley Cup winner to be the next coach of the team.
When Lou Lamoriello fired former head-coach Doug Weight he guaranteed that the Islanders would hire the best coach available, and that he did in hiring Stanley Cup Champion, Barry Trotz. Besides Al Arbour this is the best Isles coach in the history of the team. Trotz is fifth in NHL history with 762 wins, 20 behind Arbour. It is truly a great day for Isles fans, we now have one of the best coaches in the game and I would argue he might be the best. The experience Trotz brings will help this team and organization as a whole no doubt, but he also helps the John Tavares situation. Yes, before this offseason the Islanders have not done much to convince JT to stay but this hiring should make an immense different. If Tavares left the Islanders before Lamoriello and Trotz were hired no one would blame him, but now that they are here I think the switch has flipped. If JT leaves Long Island he will be seen as the bad guy. Since day one I believed JT would re-sign with the Isles and this only strengthens my belief he will re-sign. Barry Trotz is the new head coach of the New York Islanders…Did you ever think you would hear that? Great day for us Islander fans!
