It has been an interesting couple of games for the New York Islanders…As a fan of this team for many years it was an infuriating couple of games to watch. The Islanders comeback late to beat Detroit after Tyler Bertuzzi two-hand slashed Cal Clutterbuck on the knee; this lead to a five-minute Power Play for the Isles. The Isles ended up scoring 4 power-play goals in that five-minute span and made the score 6-5 in their favor. Just minutes later with goaltender, Mrazek, pulled and the extra skater on the ice the Wings tied it to make the game 6-6. Any Islanders fan could see this coming because it has happened hundreds of times over the last few years. SO FRUSTRATING. Eventually in overtime Matty Barzal sauced a puck over to Brock Nelson who scored and completed his hat-trick. Last night game against Calgary the Isles were up 2-0 and let in three unanswered goals. Two of them coming in the third period and one coming in the last two minutes of play. So, the Islanders went 1-1 in those two games so why am I complaining?
As a die-hard Isles fan these two games brought out a lot of frustration to not only myself but some of the loyal fanbase. The Islanders have been HORRENDOUS in the last two months. Since December 1st they have a record of 13-16-4 and have let up 134 goals in this time. 15 out of those 43 games they gave up more than FIVE goals. FIVE. It feels as if the Islanders season is falling away once again. The Islanders have made the playoffs ONCE since 1993. What to talk about a frustrated fanbase…we are right here.
It is hard to still believe in Doug Weight at this point. I was very optimistic going into this season with Doug behind the bench, but he has not proven anything positive to me so far and he is running out of time, quickly. What he has proven is that he cannot coach his team to play team defense for the life of him. By far the Islanders give up the most goals in the NHL and will most likely will be on the wrong side of setting records at the end of the year pertaining to goals against. Secondly, when this team losses they seem to either get blown out or let up a goal in the last minutes of the game. I cannot totally blame this on Weight, but he must be accountable considering it is his team. Lastly, after the Red Wings tied the game Friday night Weight complained to the ref about goalie interference. Do me a favor Doug and quit complaining to the refs and focus on why your team is letting in tying goals against one of the worst teams in the league.
Snow has 25 regular season games and two weeks before the trade deadline to convince John Tavares to re-sign with the Islanders. John Tavares is a winner; he wants to play for a team that is contending for a Stanley Cup. Snow at the deadline must make moves to improve this team or it will be another lost year for the New York Islanders and the loss of John Tavares to free-agency. Also, if the Islanders do not make the playoffs I hope Jon Ledecky has the marbles to pull the plug on Garth Snow. Snow did not do enough in the offseason to make this team a contender. In Garth We Trust?
The Islanders have the biggest week of the season ahead of them. They play three division teams who are within one point of them. On Tuesday night the Columbus Blue Jackets come to town, on Thursday they play the Rangers at Barclays, and lastly on Friday they faceoff against the Carolina Hurricanes. If the Islanders somehow can manage to get 5 points out of these three games their season can be saved for the time being. They would be most likely sitting in the wild-card two spot. So, I have not lost faith in this team because I never do Unfortanetly. Huge week coming up. LET’S GO ISLANDERS!!!
