What is the key going into the Stanley Cup Playoffs? Being a hot team at the right time. That is exactly what is happening for the Columbus Blue Jackets right now.
History backs up this notion, that getting hot late in the regular season helps in the post season. If you look at the cup winners from the past 10 years, not including the 2012-2013 lockout season, for the most part the champions have ranked within the top 10 in goal differential in the last 20 games of the regular season. The chart below shows this interesting trend…
As of a week ago the Columbus Blue Jackets were fighting for their lives to get into a playoff spot. Well that has changed because of their 10-4 record in the month of March so far. In March the Jackets also won 10 straight games, the streak was ended Saturday night at home against the Blues, but an impressive streak late in the season. Due to their stellar play, the Blue Jackets currently sit in the third spot in the Metropolitan Division ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils. The Flyers and Devils are right behind the Jackets but if they continue to play the way they have, they should finish third in the Metro.
If Columbus stays in third they will be taking on the two-time defending Champs, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in a rematch from last year’s playoffs. Man, this would be an awesome series, the Blue Jackets were knocked out of the playoffs last year by the Penguins. There is bad blood between these two clubs which would make for an intense series. If there is one team to take down the Penguins in the Metro division it could be the Columbus Blue Jackets…
Will the Columbus Blue Jackets win the cup?
