After a huge Game 3 victory the Capitals are in the driver’s seat with a 2-1 lead. Will they finally beat the Penguins in the Second Round?

The success of the Washington Capitals over the past decade plus has been lead by the same two guys that put the Caps ahead last night and gave them a 2-1 series lead. Both Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have gigantic monkeys on their backs for being the two biggest parts of the franchise, but to this point not giving the Caps much playoff success. It was only fitting that what might be the biggest goal in Capitals history to this point was the way its been for a decade plus, Backstrom to Ovechkin.
The goal happened with just over a minute to go in last nights Game 3 matchup against Pittsburgh. Nicklas Backstrom lead a two on one opportunity with his long time teammate Alex Ovechkin. On the play he was able to make a pretty pass to Ovechkin who hit the post on his initial shot, but was able to miraculously bat in the rebound in mid air. Ovechkin’s reaction said it all. That one scream of joy showed just how big of a moment this truly was. It’s a goal that can finally change the Caps playoff failures into successes.
If the Capitals are going to get to the next round and beat the Penguins, then Alex Ovechkin needs to keep scoring clutch goals like he did last night. A huge game winning goal in the playoffs is something we haven’t seen much out of Ovechkin in previous playoffs. If he can regularly put the team on his back in the third period when they need him most, the Caps chances of finally beating the Penguins increase mightily. Ovechkin has been great thus far these playoffs with 13 points (8 goals, 5 assists) and so has Nicklas Backstrom as he has 12 points thus far (3 goals, 9 assists). The Capitals desperately need these two to keep leading the charge if they want to have any playoff success.
We have never seen this script in the previous two series these teams played both last season and the season prior. The Caps have a 2-1 series lead, but will they be able to get two more wins over the mighty Penguins? Will they finally slay the dragon? Well only time will tell, but Ovechkin’s game winning goal in Game 3 will go a long way in boosting the team’s confidence the rest of the series.
