HA. Hahahaha. Hahahaha…ha…hahaha…damn. The New York Giants lost to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday by a score of 33-18, and this season has gone from DEFCON 4 to DEFCON 2 pretty quickly. I would not say that the season is lost just yet (mainly due to the rest of the NFC East being mediocre), but the Giants are looming over the precipice of demise, and Eli Manning and gang look like they’re just about ready to take the plunge. It’s dejá vú from last year.
I thought the Giants defense looked pretty solid this past weekend, but if it wasn’t for Landon Collins (14 tackles, 1 pass break-up), I say the Saints drop a 50-burger on the G-men. LC21 is a stud, and the Giants need to keep him around for future success. Holding the Saints explosive offense to 12 points in the first half was a win for the Giants, but only scoring 7 in the first half was simply not enough, and it showed quickly into the second half. I don’t know whether or not Odell Beckham is to partially blame for this lack of offense, because Sterling Shepard has been going off with Evan Engram missing, but the play-calling has been laughable to this point. Eli attempting a long pass of FOURTEEN YARDS is insane.
I have long been an Eli Manning apologist. The man won two Super Bowl MVPs and was the quarterback that I grew up watching, but it really looks like he is done. As previously stated, a long pass of 14 yards is a dink and dunk pass for guys like Jared Goff and Patrick Mahommes, but it seems to be a challenge for Eli. I don’t understand if it’s Eli’s ability that is the issue or the lack of trust Pat Shurmur has in his aged quarterback, but wow, grow a pair and dial up a few deep passes! It’s not like Odell Beckham signed a mega-contract this offseason and is particularly adept in stretching the field or anything…
I hate being a pessimistic fan. I’m not a pessimistic person. But, you can’t help yourself but to feel this way after 4 weeks of this year’s Giants. The spark is just not there, and the Giants need to find it within themselves to win next week, or they will be 1-4, and at that point, written off by most in the league. I believe they can still turn it around, but time is running out and FAST.
