Shaquem Griffin had a terrific combine. The linebacker from UCF, whose left hand was amputated when he was four due to a congenital condition, turned heads at the event.
He ran the fastest 40-yard dash for a linebacker since 2003, at 4.38 seconds. Shaquem’s goal on the bench press going into the combine was 6 reps … with his personal best being 11 … and ended up with 20! He almost doubled his record. Griffin said his “adrenaline was going through the roof” and could not be stopped. Scouts have said that he leaves the combine as a potential 3rd - 5th round draft pick.
If someone is like that is in my locker room I would play every down like it’s my last. JJ Watt, Tyrann Mathieu, Ryan Shazier, and other NFL stars were already tweeting at him in response to his dominant performance at the combine. You can feel the energy that players in the league want him on their team.
Shaquem Griffin was invited late to the combine even though he was the AAC Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive MVP at the Peach Bowl. He can play in coverage, is a great pass rusher, and will always be around the football to disrupt plays in the backfield. With proving his speed, strength, and overall athleticism at the combine, I would say he will be a mid-third round pick. Griffin’s ability to be involved in every play shows how much effort he puts in each and every down and that kind of work ethic can inspire an entire locker room to play their hearts out.
