BREAKING NEWS (per @JosinaAnderson): The New York Giants and star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. have agreed upon a contract extension worth $95 million over the course of 5 years, with 65 of that 95 million in guaranteed money.
LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. In what seemed like the overhanging story line of the Giants' summer, the story has finally reached a triumphant conclusion, and the Giants and Odell Beckham’s bank account are very happy. First off, let me establish that I believe that this is absolutely way too much money to be giving Odell, however, based on the contract market for receivers and the inflation of the NFL as we know it, this is honestly not that bad. Sure, OBJ can get injured week 1 and never play another snap in his life (my personal Hell), but pessimistic thinking is what leads to teams like the Jets and Browns being perpetual bottom-feeding teams that they are. The anti-Odell squad is my least favorite sect of Giants fans (second only to the "should have taken Darnold" sect), and I do genuinely feel bad for these people.
The Giants brass, specifically John Mara, voiced their support behind Odell the entire offseason, assuring fans that Beckham was *their guy.* Surely, the New York faithful/media (Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News) found every little off-field incident or minor occurrence on social media to be some reason that the Giants shouldn’t extend an elite receiver, especially one as poignant and notorious and Odell Beckham, however, in the end, the deal was just finished. The Giants put their support behind Beckham like they promised they would, now it is up to Odell to go out on the field each week and justify the money he just secured. The best part about all of this is Odell is now healthy AND wealthy. Watch out, NFL. Today is a good day, Giants Nation. In the words of Damon “Snacks” Harrison; “Tomorrow, we hunt.”
Here are some reasons that justify that contract. Cheers to more to come from #13!
