I do not understand how draft picks are so overvalued. Players that are believed to be elite are being given up for 5th and 6th round picks. I get that some teams trade these players to dump huge contracts to create cap space, but some of these trades are completely lopsided. My suspicion of draft picks first started when the Patriots gave away backup QB, Jimmy Garoppolo, to the 49ers for a 2nd round pick. Jimmy G was known to be a great backup quarterback with tremendous amounts of potential and many believed he should have been worth at least a first-round pick.
The trades over the last number of days bring up the topic again: Are draft picks are really as valuable as teams think?
The Giants recently traded with the Rams for their star linebacker, Alec Ogletree, and a 7th round pick for a 4th and a 6th round pick.
Although the Rams acquired draft picks in this trade, they certainly cashed out on their other draft picks for an elite secondary. The Rams traded with the Chiefs for a 4th round pick this year and a 2nd round pick next year for cornerback, Marcus Peters and a 6th round pick.
The Rams also traded for Aqib Talib and gave the Broncos a 5th round pick. Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib will certainly make more of an impact than any young rookie coming into the league this year.
Draft picks are not as valuable as teams in the league think and I just hope someone tells the Browns before they tank for another 10 more years.
UPDATE: Someone told the Browns! They used their 2018 4th round pick and 2019 7th round pick to acquire Miami WR Jarvis Landry, they continued to trade their 3rd round pick for Tyrod Taylor and traded away Deshone Kizer for Packers CB, Damarious Randall. The Browns shocked everyone with these trades and they weren't even done yet. They traded away former first round pick, Danny Shelton, for a conditional pick. The Browns finally realized that stockpiling draft picks is never the viable option and we could all only hope that they might win a game or 2 this year.
