After a disappointing 5-5 start to the season, Yankee fans are getting restless due to poor performances from the team’s stars. The most notable player that has not played very well so far is Giancarlo Stanton, who despite hitting three home runs through ten games, has struck out 20 times in 42 at bats and is hitting just .167. Stanton might be having a hard time adjusting to being a DH most games as well as the extra pressure that comes along with playing in New York. I am definitely not willing to label him as a bust through only ten games as I think it is only fair to see him play for at least a few months and get used to life as a Yankee before anyone declares him a bust. Even though Stanton has not lived up to the hype this far, the rest of the team has not played well either so the mediocre start to the year cannot be placed solely on Stanton’s shoulders.
I believe that the main problem with the Yankees right now is that they are not healthy. To this point in the season, the following players are on the disabled list for the Yankees: Greg Bird (ankle), C.C. Sabathia (hip), Brandon Drury (migraines), Aaron Hicks (ribs), Clint Frazier (concussion), and Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique strain). One of the best aspects of this Yankee roster is that it has so much talent and depth, so the Yankees are able to adapt and not fall out of contention when the injury bug hits. Since I believe that this is the biggest problem the Yankees are facing at the moment, the fans need to be patient and wait for the team to get healthy before they throw in the towel on this season.
In my opinion, another major problem is Dellin Betances, who hasn’t been as dominant as he once was in the past and has gotten exposed multiple times by baserunners when it comes to his lack of ability to deliver the ball to the catcher quickly. I am starting to worry if Betances will ever get his mojo back and it could be time to try and trade the flame throwing righty for someone more consistent.
The Yankees start a three game series against the Red Sox tomorrow so maybe the team will come ready and play inspired baseball as they need to win this series in order to stay close to the Red Sox in the standings. After the series against the Sox, New York plays Detroit and Miami, who are both not very good so they should be able to get rolling soon. As a whole, I still believe this team will be dominant this season and the fans just need to be patient.
