This insufferable offseason has been historically boring but it will be coming to an end soon as spring training will start about a week from today. The players are getting restless and the teams must be close to getting the players they need at a lower price than originally expected. In my opinion, one big name free agent will sign, and then the dominoes will fall. This raises the question of who will be the star free agent that will create this domino effect.
I believe that Yu Darvish will be the guy that gets the ball rolling for the rest of the free agents. Jon Morosi of MLB.com reported on January 24th that it was “increasingly likely” that Yu Darvish would sign by the end of that week. Despite this not coming to fruition, Morosi is a well-respected reporter and it makes me believe that Darvish is sick of waiting around and is ready to sign. If Darvish was the first big name player to sign, I think that it would create some anxiety amongst teams to fill the holes in their rotations and players such as Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb would start to get better offers. This could also motivate teams to go after the big name hitters on the market as well and bring baseball fans some much needed action this offseason. The best fit for Darvish in my opinion is with the Minnesota Twins as they could have a solid chance to win their division next year if they signed Darvish as the Indians seemed to take a step back from last season and the other teams in the division are entering rebuilding years. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I think Yu Darvish will sign in the next couple of days and then set off a domino effect of more free agent signings around the league.
