One of the most talked about storylines throughout the season has been where the Orioles will trade Manny Machado. Having past up an opportunity to get a king’s ransom for Machado last trade deadline thinking they could compete in the AL East, the Orioles are now forced to trade Machado to the highest bidder for significantly less than they would have gotten a year ago. Things have seemingly picked up a lot in the last week or so in the Machado sweepstakes, so this trade might happen any day now. It makes a lot of sense for the Orioles to trade Machado a few weeks before the deadline, as his value gets lower and lower as the days go by due to the fact that he is a free agent at the end of this season and there is no guarantee he will re-sign with the team he is traded to.
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles are “in the process of fielding offers from seven different teams”. These teams are reportedly the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Brewers, Phillies, Braves, Indians, and Cubs. Then, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported today that the Dodgers and Brewers are the “most serious” teams in regards to a trade for Machado. The Dodgers make a ton of sense for a potential deal with the Orioles because they lost their star shortstop, Corey Seager, to Tommy John surgery at the beginning of this season, so they would be completely okay with Machado signing elsewhere in the offseason. The Dodgers also have the prospects and financial flexibility to acquire Machado. In Milwaukee's case, it would be huge if the Brewers made a splash and traded for Machado, as they truly have a great chance at dethroning the Cubs in the NL Central. The Brewers also have a few different players they could package together to tempt the Orioles to accept a deal.
In my opinion, the Dodgers are the favorites to win the National League, as they have the most talented team in the league. Therefore, if the Dodgers were to trade for Machado, it would be a move to try to compete with the stud teams in the American League that they could face in the World Series. If the Brewers were to trade for Machado, I think it would be to try to beat the Dodgers in the playoffs and see what happens in the World Series against the Astros, Yankees, or Red Sox. Unless the Brewers are able to acquire more pitching in addition to Machado, I don’t think they would have a realistic chance at beating whichever American League team advances to the World Series. If I had to pick one of the other teams that were listed as a dark horse candidate to land Machado, I would pick the Phillies. I thought that was where Manny would end up when I made some early trade deadline predicitions a while back and I still think it makes a lot of sense for Philly to try to make a big move for Manny. I’m not sure if people realize just how close the Orioles might be to trading Machado, but this could happen any day now so keep your ears open.
