Well this is something that all baseball fans probably could not have imagined. The one thing in the trade deadline I am most excited and intrigued to see is if the Nationals are sellers at the trade deadline tomorrow afternoon. I know this is insane to think but the Nats are 1 game under .500 and in 3rd place in the NL East. I am beyond shocked to that the team that is "supposed" to win the World Series isn't even above .500. Baseball is crazy sport and this is why I love it because who would have thought this? We all believed that this stacked National teams would win the division and the Mets would be in second and clearly this isn't the case.
Now, let's look more in depth and start off with I believe the Nationals should sell. I think this because the Nats have a lot of great pieces that many contenders can use. News broke today that the culture under manger Dave Martinez is very poor, so why not trade some pieces and receive some top prospects. I don't think they should have a total fire sale but maybe trade players like Daniel Murphy, Kelvin Herrera, Brandon Kintzler. Adam Eaton or Tanner Roark. Even players like Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Madson and Shawn Kelley can help some contending teams. GM Mike Rizzo should roll the dice a little bit as the Phillies and Braves have showed that a good young core of players can go a long way. Years of suffering and trading away stars for those teams are now paying off and the 2 teams are battling it out for 1st place.
The most interesting pieces I think that could moved are Bryce Harper or Stephen Strasburg. Most recently rumors have by building up that teams such as the Dodgers and Indians are interested in Harper, I mean who wouldn't be? Harper is undoubtably a top 5 hitter in the league and I think the Nationals should trade him. I know it's a crazy thought but hear this out. Harper is a free agent at the end of the year and will demand around $300 million contract, which I believe no player deserves. The Nats can also receive a ton of top prospects from any team that they trade him. The teams also has 2 young studs in the outfield with Juan Soto (who is off to a better start to his career than Harper) and Victor Robles who is a top 3 prospect in the game to build around. So why not reach out and trade him and rebuild that farm system. Strasburg is the other name I believe the Nats should maybe trade to a contender like the Brewers who need a starter. The Nats can surely receive a nice package of prospects for Stras, who can be a top 10 pitcher when healthy and has full control of his pitchers.
Personally, this is my opinion, but anything can happen within the next few hours. The MLB trade deadline is one of the best times of the year on the baseball calendar and seeing big names like Manny Machado being dealt is just great to watch. So Nats fans don't worry, I believe they will be fine over the next year, but i believe they should just try to get some prospects.
