While this MLB offseason has been quite boring, the other free agent market happening behind the scenes is just revving up. I’m talking about the AGENT market, with two big time agencies working on player representation losing many clients due to recent scandals.
Currently under investigation is ACES Inc, one of the top 10 baseball representation firms in the country. A recent report from a former worker claims that the owners of ACES, Seth and Sam Levinson, often persuaded him to recruit players to their firm by paying money and gifts to the player’s family (an illegal action stipulated by the MLBPA), as well as having him set up orders of PED’s to certain players. Current players under ACES representation include Dustin Pedroia, Jeff Locke, AJ Ellis, Josh Reddick, Wellington Castillo, and Matt Joyce to name a few.
Another agency currently in hot water is CSE Talent and specifically former agent Jason Wood. Earlier this year, Mr. Wood was accused by one of his clients of recording the player showering. Since these allegations Jason Wood has been fired from CSE Talent. His clients include Jake Odorizzi, David Phelps, Andrew Benintendi, Cody Asche, and Rockies prospect Riley Pint. Reports have come about that these and many other of Mr. Woods’ clients have fired him as their agent.
Both cases leave the potential for many players to seek new representation which can greatly affect baseball free agency in the future. We have seen the effects of a Scott Boras negotiation raising player salaries and with a larger number of top players under his representation the likelihood of a strike once this most recent CBA ends appears to be increasingly likely as Boras presses clients to hold out.
