The Philadelphia Phillies have strengthened their rotation over the past 24 hours. The signing of All-Star pitcher Jake Arrieta, gives the Phillies an ace; who can assist the young arms in the Phillies staff. The Phillies finished in last place in the NL East last year, but now seek to be a competitor in the east this year.
Arrieta, for the past 3 season has been a top 5 pitcher in the league accumulating a 54-28 record with 2.80 ERA and 409 strikeouts. In 2015, Arrieta won the NL Cy Young award going 22-6 with a 1.77 ERA and 236 strikeouts. That year, Arrieta was downright unhittable and the Phillies hope that same Jake can be the leader of their rotation for the next 3 years. The past season, Arrieta did decline and struggled during the first half of the season, but once again he finished strong totaling a 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA and 163 strikeouts. Arrieta is a competitor and warrior, who always seems to finish stronger than when he starts and this is what makes him a such an effective pitcher
The Phillies hope to make it back to the post season for the first time since 2011, and Arrieta can give them a great shot at winning every fifth day. With a career 3.08 postseason ERA, Arrieta can figure to be a key factor in a Phillies post season run if they happen to get there. In his career, he also has 2 no hitters which is a huge accomplishment for any pitcher. With this move, I believe the Phillies got a competitor who loves to win and will give 100% every time he steps on the mound.
